Places visited

Flaming Cliffs dinosaur fossil site, Bayanzag, Yoliin Am / Vulture Valley and Khongor sand dunes.

Day 1: Ulaanbaatar city tour

Morning arrival and hotel transfer. After breakfast and a short rest, visit Gandan Monastery and the National Museum. In the afternoon, tour the city and Bogd Khan Palace Museum. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 2: Flight to South Gobi and the Flaming Cliffs

Meet at your accommodation and transfer to the airport for the 1.5-hour flight to Dalanzadgad, capital of South Gobi province. Our team meets you at the airport. Drive across open steppe to the Flaming Cliffs, where Roy Chapman Andrews discovered dinosaur remains and the first dinosaur eggs known to science. Settle into a ger camp and rest after the early start. Hike among the cliffs, look for fossil traces and see the Gobi trees at Bayanzag. The cliffs are especially beautiful at sunset. Enjoy sunrise and sunset over the steppe.

Day 3: Khongor sand dunes

Travel to the great Khongor dunes. Walk beside the green riverbanks, climb the dunes, visit a nomadic family and ride camels for one hour. Scatter sand northward against the wind from the top of a high dune to discover why local people call them Singing Sands. Enjoy the remarkable views.

Day 4: Hiking in Yoliin Am / Vulture Valley

Drive past long dunes, rugged blue mountains and steppe toward Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park, whose name means Three Beautiful Mountains in the Gobi. At the end of the Altai range, this is one of Mongolia's largest and most distinctive parks. Drive to the designated parking area at Yoliin Am and hike into the gorge. The green valley is home to golden eagles, shy wild sheep and ibex. The return hike takes about 2.5 hours. Drive out of the mountains afterward.
